Miles came into HART's care on February 2, 2017 from a cruelty situation. At just 3.5 months old he had a broken femur. Surgery was immediately performed but his bones were so weak that neither a plate or screws could be affixed. The vet gave us two choices, amputate the leg or euthanize. It wasn't a difficult decision, his leg was amputated.
Due to malnutrition Miles was very weak, underweight and in poor condition for the surgery but we had no choice, it was an emergency. He made it through the surgery but then came the task of building his strength and helping him learn to live with just three legs.
The video below shows him walking the day after his surgery.
During the weeks following his surgery Miles did not do well at all. He could not keep any food down and was losing weight. Weakness prevented him from being able to walk and he spent the majority of his time sleeping or just laying helpless, too weak to move around. He was back and forth to the vet many times and on a cocktail of pain killers, anti-nausea medications, vitamins and antibiotics to help his little body heal.
Paying for Miles’s emergency surgery, medication, special diet and aftercare has put a dent in HART’s finances. To date his costs have exceeded $2500. If you can help us with Miles’s veterinary costs so we can take care of him along with the other dogs who come to HART in less desperate circumstances, it would be very much appreciated.
We've created a fund on CanadaHelps.Org specifically for him. You can check out all methods of donating on the Donate page of HART's website. Any amount would be greatly appreciated and a tax receipt will be issued for donations over $20. Thank you for caring.
Updates on Miles's Progress

Miles had his stitches removed, his incision had healed wonderfully. Now he just needed to consistently keep food down so he could gain some much needed weight. Simply put, his digestive system was so messed up from his previous poor diet and the medications he was taking that he was having a hard time with high quality kibble. The decision was made to switch him to a raw diet in the hopes that he would find it easier to digest. His foster Dad went to the pet store and bought him some Big Country Raw meals. Miles began eating his meals with gusto! So much gusto that his foster Mom started feeding him by hand to slow him down. See below!

After just a few days on the raw diet Miles began showing great improvement. He was keeping all his meals down, had increased energy and even started playing. Yay!

It's been three weeks since wee Miles's surgery and he's doing fantastic! During the past week he has improved by leaps and bounds. He's still greatly enjoying the raw diet, has definitely gained weight, his coat is softening and beginning to shine and his walking speed has increased. He is still getting the hang of walking with only three legs but look at him go - learning to fetch! So heartwarming!

Miles is doing great! He's gained two kilograms in the past two weeks and hasn't thrown up once. Yay! The raw food diet is really working for him and we will continue with it. He will be starting a puppy class this weekend to help him with his socialization as we're certain he received no socialization from his previous owners. Better late than never!

Mile has had a few really rough days and has lost 2 lbs since last week. He is once again not eating and throwing up anything that he does eat. He went to the vet for xrays and a barium swallow the following day. He spent all of March 8 at the vet being monitored and xrayed once the barium passed through his system. No blockage was found, which was good news. We don't know why he was off but are hopeful he will turn it around. Poor guy!

On Saturday Miles was still a bit off but near the end of the day he began to feel better and actually wanted to eat. He woke up on Sunday full of energy and gobbled up all his breakfast. The video below shows him booting around inside and outside. You can see he is gaining speed and getting the hang of almost running with only three legs.

It's been 6 weeks since his surgery! Miles has been in good spirits since Sunday, eating all his meals and enjoying life. He went for a weigh-in at the vet and he's gained back the weight he lost last week. On March 7th he was 7.5 kg and today he's 9.3 kg. Wahoo!! The video below shows him trying to be involved with the big dogs as they run and play. Look at him go!

Miles tipped the scales today at 10 kg! He is steadily gaining weight and building strength. He continues to love the resident dogs at his foster home and has started having other dogs come over for playdates. In the video below he's playing with 7 month old Ivy, who was adopted from HART when she was a wee puppy. Pretty cute!

Your weekly Miles update! It's been 8 weeks since his surgery and he's had 3 solid, stable weeks of great eating, weight gain and no health concerns. Our volunteers are working on writing his bio and taking updated pictures to post him for adoption within the next week. It's time!
His journey to good health hasn't been easy and we couldn't have helped him without your support. Thank you for all your kind words of encouragement, donations and sharing of his story. We very much appreciate it!
For now, enjoy this video of Miles playing with new HART arrival Billy.
